James Shields

Watermelon Couch

James Shields is being recognized for blending creativity and activism through his docu-series, Watermelon Couch. This multimedia project began in 2022 with a watermelon-shaped couch built for Juneteenth. With wit and a deep care for the wisdom of community stories, James took the watermelon couch on a road trip across the U.S. to amplify the voices of Black farmers, artists, activists, and business owners.

Through storytelling, art, and community building, Watermelon Couch uplifts Black culture, addresses food justice, and raises awareness about the climate crisis. James has already traveled to over 15 states, collecting powerful narratives and creating drawings, designs, and prints inspired by the journey.
